Autumn Outfits for Babies: Cosy, Colourful Ideas for Cooler Days 🍂
Share
Crunchy leaves, cooler mornings and tiny knitted hats — autumn might just be the cutest season for dressing babies.
But British autumn weather can be unpredictable. One minute it’s surprisingly warm, the next you’re reaching for another layer. The best autumn outfits for babies are therefore comfortable, easy to layer and simple to adjust throughout the day.
Here are some of our favourite ways to dress little ones for autumn — without saying goodbye to colour.
1. Start With a Soft Sleepsuit
Sleepsuits aren't just for bedtime.
A soft, stretchy sleepsuit makes an easy base for an autumn baby outfit, particularly on days when you're moving between a warm house and cooler weather outside.
At Näpp, our sleepsuits are made from 95% bamboo lyocell and 5% elastane, with a substantial 260 GSM fabric and plenty of stretch.
Wear one on its own when it's mild, then add layers as the temperature drops.
And because autumn doesn't have to mean brown and beige, ours come in bold leopard prints and unexpected colour combinations.
2. Sleepsuit + Chunky Cardigan
Possibly the easiest autumn outfit of them all.
Pair a colourful sleepsuit with a cosy knitted cardigan and you've instantly got an outfit that's ready for a walk through the park, a café stop or an afternoon exploring fallen leaves.
The best bit? If it warms up, simply take off the cardigan.
Try a neutral knit over a bold leopard print, or go full maximalist and mix colours.
3. Add a Knitted Bonnet or Beanie
There is something undeniably adorable about a baby in a little knitted hat.
Choose a shade from their sleepsuit and repeat it in their hat — pink, cobalt, forest green or purple all work beautifully for autumn without relying on traditional rust and mustard.
It's an easy way to make a practical outfit feel put together.
4. Layer Up for the Pram
Heading out on a crisp autumn morning?
Layers are your friend.
Start with a comfortable base, then add suitable outer layers depending on the weather. A cardigan or jumper, hat and appropriate outerwear can all be removed as temperatures change.
Remember that babies can also become warm in prams, particularly when blankets, footmuffs or rain covers are being used, so check them regularly and adjust their layers as needed.
5. Bring Out the Leopard Print 🐆
Leopard print and autumn were made for each other.
But it doesn't have to be traditional brown.
Deep navy, forest green, rich purple and bright pops of pink can all work beautifully against autumn leaves. They're also a fun way to bring some personality to the sea of muted colours that tends to arrive in children's clothing at this time of year.
Our Leopard Pop collection was designed for exactly that: bold prints for little people with big personalities.
6. Sleepsuit + Gilet for an Autumn Day Out
For older babies, a gilet layered over a sleepsuit can make a particularly cute daytime look.
Add a knitted hat and you're ready for pumpkin picking, a trip to the farm or that obligatory photograph sitting amongst the autumn leaves.
Just choose layers that are appropriate for your baby's age, activity and the temperature that day.
7. Don't Save Their Favourite Sleepsuits for Bedtime
One of the easiest ways to get more wear from baby clothes is to stop thinking of sleepsuits as purely nightwear.
A beautifully made sleepsuit can be an outfit in its own right.
They're comfortable for crawling, wriggling and exploring, there are no waistbands digging into little tummies, and changing time stays wonderfully simple.
Add a cardigan and you've got an autumn outfit.
Take it off and they're ready for a nap.
Simple.
What Should a Baby Wear in Autumn in the UK?
There's no single perfect autumn outfit for a baby because UK temperatures can vary considerably from one day — or hour — to the next.
Rather than dressing for the season, dress for the temperature and use layers that can easily be added or removed.
As a general rule, regularly check whether your baby feels comfortably warm rather than relying on their hands or feet, which can naturally feel cooler. NHS guidance recommends feeling your baby's chest or the back of their neck to check their temperature, and removing a layer if their skin feels hot or sweaty.
And remember that outdoor clothing, including hats, should be removed once you're somewhere warm.
Colourful Autumn Baby Clothes
Autumn wardrobes don't have to suddenly become beige.
Keep the rusts, creams and chunky knits — but throw in cobalt blue. Add hot pink. Mix forest green with purple. Put leopard print underneath a traditional knitted cardigan.
Baby clothes are allowed to be fun.
At Näpp, we make seriously soft bamboo lyocell sleepsuits with bold prints, practical double-ended zips, fold-over feet and cuffs, and plenty of personality.
Made for sleep.
Made for play.
And very much made for autumn adventures. 🍂🐆
