What Should a Baby Wear in Autumn? A UK Guide 🍂
Share
Autumn in the UK can make dressing a baby surprisingly tricky.
A chilly morning can turn into a warm, sunny afternoon, while the next day brings wind and rain. If you've found yourself wondering what should my baby wear in autumn?, you're certainly not alone.
The good news is that you don't need a completely different wardrobe for every change in the weather. Comfortable clothes and layers that can easily be added or removed make those unpredictable autumn days much easier.
Here’s our guide to dressing a baby in autumn in the UK, based on safer-temperature guidance from the NHS and The Lullaby Trust.
How Should I Dress My Baby in Autumn?
Rather than dressing your baby simply because it's "autumn", think about the actual conditions that day and where you'll be going.
A soft base layer, such as a bodysuit or sleepsuit, gives you somewhere to start. You can then add or remove a cardigan, jumper or suitable outer layer as needed.
This is particularly useful when you're moving between a chilly walk outside and a heated café, shop, car or home.
The NHS advises removing hats and extra clothing when you come indoors or enter a warm car, bus or train to help prevent babies becoming too hot.
How Do I Know if My Baby Is Too Hot?
One of the most useful pieces of guidance for autumn - and something that's easy to remember - is where to check your baby's temperature.
The NHS and The Lullaby Trust recommend feeling your baby's chest or the back of their neck.
Don't judge their temperature from their hands and feet. These can naturally feel cooler.
If your baby's skin feels hot or sweaty, remove one or more layers.
So rather than relying entirely on the weather forecast, keep checking your baby and adjust their clothing as you go.
What Should a Baby Wear in a Pram in Autumn?
A pram walk on a crisp autumn morning is very different from spending the afternoon inside a warm café, so layers are particularly useful.
Start with comfortable clothing against your baby's skin and add appropriate outer layers for the conditions.
Remember to think about everything keeping your baby warm - not just their clothes. Blankets and other insulating layers add warmth too.
Most importantly, continue checking your baby's chest or the back of their neck to make sure they aren't becoming too warm.
What Should a Baby Wear in a Carrier in Autumn?
If you're using a baby sling or carrier, safety and positioning are particularly important.
The Lullaby Trust recommends following the TICKS guidance:
T – Tight
I – In view at all times
C – Close enough to kiss
K – Keep chin off the chest
S – Supported back
This helps ensure that your baby's airway remains clear and that they aren't overheating.
Keep checking your baby during your autumn walk and adjust their clothing if necessary.
Can Babies Wear Sleepsuits During the Day?
Absolutely.
Sleepsuits don't have to be reserved for bedtime. They make wonderfully simple daytime clothes for babies, particularly when you're looking for a comfortable base for autumn layering.
Add a cardigan or suitable outer layer when you head outside and remove it again when you come somewhere warm.
At näpp, our sleepsuits are made from 95% bamboo lyocell and 5% elastane in a substantial 260 GSM fabric, with plenty of stretch for wriggling, crawling and exploring.
Our fold-over feet and cuffs also give you a little extra versatility when the weather changes.
And because autumn baby clothes don't have to mean brown and beige, there are plenty of bold colours and leopard prints to choose from.
What Should My Baby Wear to Sleep in Autumn?
Night-time is slightly different from dressing your baby during the day, and this is where there is specific temperature guidance.
The NHS recommends a room temperature of around 16–20°C for sleeping babies.
The NHS advises using lightweight bedding or a well-fitting baby sleeping bag appropriate for the room temperature. If you're using a sleeping bag, follow the manufacturer's guidance on which tog is suitable and what your baby should wear underneath it.
Again, check your baby's chest or the back of their neck. If their skin feels hot or sweaty, remove a layer.
Babies don't need to wear hats indoors or while sleeping.

Autumn Baby Clothes: Layers Make Life Easier 🍂
When it comes to what babies should wear in autumn, there's no single outfit that's right for every autumn day.
British weather simply isn't that predictable.
Instead, choose comfortable clothes and practical layers that can be added and removed as the temperature and your surroundings change.
And have some fun with it.
Put a chunky neutral cardigan over cobalt blue. Pair forest green with purple. Let hot pink leopard print peek out from underneath an autumn knit.
At Näpp, we make seriously soft bamboo lyocell sleepsuits with bold prints, practical double-ended zips and fold-over feet and cuffs - designed for sleeping, playing and everything in between.
Because autumn might be getting cooler.
Baby clothes don't have to get dull.
